The Arts Are The Soul of Our Nation….Or Are They?

The 37th Annual Kennedy Center Honors Celebrate Five of the Best!

Every year, around this time, we hear politicians, celebrities, news personalities, educators, and everyday citizens praise the arts. They do so in the context of celebrating a group of individuals deemed to have made significant contributions to the cultural development of a nation…people with influence who have led the way, inspired creativity and innovation, and who represent the triumph of the human spirit. It’s the Kennedy Center Honors. This year, Steven Colbert hosted the ceremony which honored five beloved artists: Al Green, Tom Hanks, Patricia McBride, Sting, and Lily Tomlin. Anyone watching the ceremonies did so with a warm heart and a wide smile. These people are special. They have affected us in ways we can’t even imagine and they have intimately shared their visions with us for decades.

President John F. Kennedy, one of the greatest supporters of the arts our country has ever had, once said “I look forward to an America which will reward achievement in the arts as we reward achievement in business or statecraft. I look forward to an America which will steadily raise the standards of artistic accomplishment and which will steadily enlarge cultural opportunities for all of our citizens. And I look forward to an America which commands respect throughout the world not only for its strength but for its civilization as well. And I look forward to a world which will be safe not only for democracy and diversity but also for personal distinction.”

We don’t know many people who would disagree with President Kennedy. But it does beg the question…..WHY THE ATTACK ON ARTS EDUCTION IN THIS COUNTRY? We can all agree that without encouragement….without a foundation…without inspiration….those who are honored by the Kennedy Center might never have achieved their dreams…and ours. The arts are disappearing at a very base level in this country and we just cannot allow it to continue. The view that the arts are the soul of our nation, but we don’t need to fund them, share them, support them, or grow them….is an oxymoron. We need to nurture the arts for they are the future of our country…they foster innovation and creativity and invention…all of the things that have brought greatness upon our nation.

Time to get off the soap box now but we really felt the need to point out the inconsistencies. We do have one last question…..where are the writers and the painters among the Kennedy Center Honorees?

Just asking!

So, Charles Fazzino has been on the ground for almost 48 hours and already he’s made four television appearances with four more coming tomorrow! He spent this morning with the crew from Fox’s Arizona Morning, and then quickly popped back to the Phoenix Convention Center to tape a segment the ABC’s The List. The segment is set to air in the local market in Phoenix tomorrow and nationally on Friday afternoon. Check your local TV schedule to see if you get it in your area.

Our good friend Jeremy Berg from The Post Game also came by for a chat with the Super Bowl artist. His spot should air within the next 24 hours. While signing autographs at the NFL Experience, Fazzino spent a few impromptu minutes with the folks from KOMO, the ABC affiliate in Seattle. Then he headed off to Scottsdale to the open air set of NBC’s EVB Live.  He painted on air for them and spent some time chatting about where folks can see his artwork in Phoenix this week.

“It was a whirlwind day,” said Fazzino. “But I am thrilled to be here and it was exciting to be on all  of those shows. Looking forward to doing it all again tomorrow.  It’s my 15th Super Bowl and it’s just as exciting as my first. The Seahawk Fans are out in droves and we’re waiting for the Patriot fans to dig out from the recent snowstorm in the North East and get their butts out here too.”

This Friday, Charles will be signing autographs with two of the New York Giant’s finest. At 2pm in the NFL Shop at the NFL Experience, Fazzino friend and great NFL Kicker Steve Weatherford will be joining Charles, and following that at 3pm running back phenom Rashad Jennings will be doing a one hour signing. Hope to see everyone there!

Our good friend John Wright recently shared with us his collection of historical drawings. As the Director of the Thomas Paine Cottage and Museum in New Rochelle, John has continued to cultivate his love for history. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from the Parsons School of Design/New School of Social Research and he is often sought after by museums all over the country for his incredibly detailed and accurate historical illustrations and dioramas. His most recent work is shown below, an impeccably accurate rendering of Washington’s attack on Trenton in 1776. John painstakingly included every house and building that existed at that time.

“John’s art is just beautiful,” said Charles Fazzino. “His eye for detail and his dedication to the accuracy of his depictions is remarkable. His line is so crisp and through color, he really brings an air of accuracy to his work. The historical characters just come to life in his drawings!”

Charles Fazzino salutes the Patriots!

SB 49 Arizona With Team Logos and Final Score LR

What a wild time in Phoenix! Fazzino was everywhere from the NFL Shop to Phoenix University Stadium. And along the way, he spent some time with the media, including our good friend Bruce Beck from News 4 New York. Bruce stopped by the Super Bowl Art Collection exhibit at the NFL SHOP to chat with Fazzino and his guest, NY Giants punter Steve Weatherford.

Also on the docket was a signing with NFL Kicker Jay Feeley and appearances on NBC’s EVB Live, 3TVNews, Arizona Morning, and The Post Game.

“What a fantastic game,” said Charles Fazzino after it was all over. “I’m thrilled for the Patriots and heart-broken for the Seahawks. It was an honor to again put the New England Patriots Championship Banner in my Super Bowl artwork. They have cemented their legacy and I’m proud to have documented their ride over the last ten years.”

Charles Joins New Rochelle Council of the Art

Charles Fazzino has recently been elected to the Board of the New Rochelle Council of the Arts. The Council, currently celebrating its 40th anniversary, actively promotes and encourages the arts throughout New Rochelle.  Throughout the year, they sponsor cultural events, artistic happenings, and major events such as the annual New Rochelle Arts Fest during which we open up the Fazzino Art Studios for public tours. Most recently, they started a series of “pop up” encounters throughout the city, meant to engage the public in a spontaneous and surprising way. The first  took place at the end of January with another one scheduled “somewhere” towards the end of this month. So stay tuned and keep your eyes open.

NRC Gratitude Art Exhibit at City Hall

Also going on right now, is the NRCA Gratitude Art Exhibit in the Rotunda Gallery at City Hall. Stop by and take a look if you’re in the area. The exhibition features the works of twelve local artists and is open until March 19th. “I attended the opening reception for Gratitude,” said Charles Fazzino “I was impressed by the level of talent and the creativity. We have such a rich arts culture here in New Rochelle and I applaud the council’s efforts to spread the word and encourage all of us to be inspired by the talent that surrounds us.”

In March, NRCA is sponsoring a Members Exhibit in honor of Thea Eichler, one of the founding members of the Council. The work on display will be exceptional and reminiscent of the organization’s 40-year history. It will be housed in the Winter Lumen Gallery at the New Rochelle Public Library from March 1st to March 30th.

Charles Fazzino’s work will be featured in the upcoming Art of Pop & Comics Exhibition at the Coral Springs Museum of Art. Guest Curator Lenore Stern Morris has put together an engaging collection of originals and limited editions that will delight any pop culture or comic book lover. Fazzino contributed eight pieces to the exhibit, four of which are ambitious new original works that he will debut at the museum. “I’m so proud to be a part of this exhibition,” said Fazzino. “One of the purposes that art serves is to reflect our own lives back to us….almost like a psychedelic mirror. When I paint pop culture and comic themes, it’s with the goal of taking these elements and creating something new out of them, while still being true to their own essence. We, as a culture, love our cartoons. And I enjoy bringing the cartoons that people love into my own artistic world. This was a fun exhibit to put together.”

Fazzino’s featured originals include: “A Simpson’s Selfie,” “Felix the Cat in Outer Space,” and “A Cartoon Celebration of the Masters.” The exhibit runs from March 5th through May 23rd and features an artist reception and opening on March 5th. The Museum is located at 2855 Coral Springs Rd. in Coral Springs, Florida. Telephone is 954-340-5000. The reception is open to the public for a $10 donation.

Come Fly Away, Come Fly with Me…In NYC

Just as everyone is ready for a break from old man winter, Charles Fazzino releases his newest New York City limited edition, “Come Fly Away, Come Fly with Me…In NYC.”  It is a breathe of fresh spring air…colorful, and clear, and uplifting. “I meant for this piece to evoke freedom of spirit and new beginnings,” said Fazzino. “The sky is full of white fluffy clouds and wherever you go in NYC, you can look up and feel a sense of adventure and playfulness. The butterflies and dragonflies are a metaphor as they launch on their flight of joy and whimsy. It’s a fun piece and a fun look at the city I love.

New York City: Fazzino’s Favorite Subject

“Come Fly Away, Come Fly with Me…NYC” is just the latest in a very long line of Charles Fazzino tributes to The City that Never Sleeps. In fact, if you considered the entire Fazzino collection spanning over 30 years all together, you would find a pretty accurate historical picture of New York’s transformation. “I love New York and will always love New York,” Said Fazzino. “I grew up here. It’s my hometown and no matter where I go in the world, collectors ask me to keep drawing it. Have no fear…I can’t imagine my collection without NYC as a centerpiece.”

Dining Out With Fazzino

All over the world, Charles Fazzino hears from collectors about restaurants they have eaten in that feature his artwork on the walls. The most recent is Raku Sweets in Las Vegas. An intimate Japanese/French-style dessert bar, Raku only seats 13 customers at a time, but the experience is almost as delectable as the desserts. Each hand-made dessert is made right in front of you and presented in an interesting and colorful way. You can even eat the menus! The attention to detail and craftsmanship employed in the restaurant make it the perfect venue for Charles Fazzino’s “We Are the World Mural” featured prominently on the wall.

From Dirt To Art: Scott Wade Is The Dirtiest Artist You’ll Meet

Scott Wade’s Dirty Car Art

Scott Wade is a dirty artist…and we LOVE his filth! His work is a wonderful example of ingenuity born of necessity. Living on a dirt back road in Texas, Scott found himself constantly cleaning the dust off of the car windows…and then he began to doodle. Inspired by his amateur cartoonist father, Scott doodled faces and scenes and animals, experimenting with techniques and tools to make the pictures better and more detailed. His Dirty Car Art was eventually “discovered” by a writer at the Austin American Statesman who wrote about his work. The rest is history. Since then, he’s been featured in the media, hired to create art for several high profile ad campaigns, made appearances at fairs and festivals all over the country….and more!

And you KNOW whenever he’s driving his car down the street, he’s attracting attention. “Almost everywhere we go, my wife and I get folks gathering around our cars to take pictures and ask questions. More than once we’ve stopped at a stoplight and the folks in the car behind jumped out to take pictures with their camera phones. One time a guy in a pickup truck blocked me in as I was leaving the grocery store parking lot. He apologized, but asked me to stay there while his daughter went back in the store to buy a disposable camera!”

Charles Fazzino weighed in on the dirty drawer. “I always love to see someone doing something different…and this is certainly different. It’s so much fun to look at. How many times did you draw the words ‘wash me’ onto a dirty car when you were growing up. Who knew you could turn that into a legitimate art form. Scott’s an interesting guy doing interesting work and I applaud his efforts.”

A Visit To Fazzino Studios: An Essay by Sarah Q

We recently had a very special guest in the studio….budding artist and inquisitive student, Sarah Q. She came to the studio because she had a school assignment to do a report on a famous artist and she chose Charles Fazzino. We are so proud of her and the 100 that she received on her report that we decided to share it with you. So…here is our guest blogger…Sarah Q

collage

Charles Fazzino by Sarah Q

Charles Fazzino is a 3-D Pop Artist who was born in the Bronx and has lived his entire life in Pelham Manor. Charles has a brother and sister. His brother is very artistic but did not go into the arts. His sister is a nurse who also is very artistic but she did not take up art as a career. He is married and has one daughter named Heather. Heather appeared in many of Charles’ early paintings. Heather is now 23 years old and is an artist as well.

Charles attended Pelham Middle / High School. He did not have a favorite grade because he didn’t really enjoy school. He started school very young because he was born in the end of December. He was 1 to 2 years younger than all of his classmates. School was a very challenging time for him. His best subjects were history and art. Despite this difficulty, Charles’ teacher Ms. Hammer was instrumental in him becoming an artist. She encouraged him to draw because she thought he had a special talent. After high school, Charles attended the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. His major was art.

Charles became interested in art because of his mother and father. His mother was and still is a craftsperson and brought Charles and his sister to outside art shows when he was in 6th and 7th grade. This is when he began to see that you could create things with your hands and sell it and possibly make a living at it. His father was a shoe designer in New York. He also had a shoe company in New Rochelle in the 1950s and1960s. Art was always around him and so that is why he decided to go into art.
Charles’ type of art is known as Pop Art which is a culmination of many different things. When he was in art school he did a little bit of printmaking, a little bit of illustration and he loved pop out books as a child. These three things all came together in his last year of college. He put together things he loved. His artwork and the way he draws in linear lines lent itself to do Pop Art because it is very modern looking.

No other artist did Pop Art the way Fazzino does. There were artists working at the same time as him and in a similar style but those artists were cartoonish or sculptural. In Fazzino’s 3-D Pop Art, he was the first one to use paper tolling as an art form. Paper tolling was originally used as decoupage for craft decorating. He was the first one to use it as an art form.

Fazzino’s career has been slow and steady. It began in the late 1970’s when he discovered the 3-D process. He continues to use the 3-D process which has evolved over the years to what it is today. It has become really popular in the past 15 years. Fazzino’s career really took off in the mid to late 1980’s when he started to do fine art prints called silk screen prints. When he first started he wasn’t using that process, he was using posters to make his 3-D artwork.

Fazzino’s 3-D Pop Art is made at a facility in Brooklyn where the original colored areas of his artwork pieces are hand painted silk screens which are then delivered to his studio to get cut and glued. The pieces that are cut and glued are also silk screen which are printed in two halves. One half of the edition is printed on thick paper and the second half is printed on a thinner paper. “We create an original silk screen edition. Half of the edition is printed on the paper and half the edition is printed on a thinner paper. The thick paper is used as the background where all the pieces from the thinner paper are cut with an exact knife by hand and glued with silicon.”

It took a lot of trial and error to find the right paper. In his early artwork he was not using the proper type of paper and they realized this when the pieces were framed and they noticed a wave in the artwork. Through trial and error, he came up with a new type of1 00% rag museum board that is very thick and it stays perfectly straight. Fazzino continues to experiment with glues and adhesives especially with the new pieces he is creating which are printed directly onto aluminum. It took Fazzino 1 -1 1/2 years to figure out how to make the silicon glues stick to the aluminum without pulling off the ink.

Fazzino does not have one individual artist who influenced his career or style. He credits his mom bringing him and his sister to New York City museums and exposing him to different arts and craft shows as influencing his career, as well as his parent’s creativity.

At this point in his career, Charles Fazzino aspires to do installations and bigger projects. He wants to do big, giant, large pieces because it allows him to have real fun and creativity. Fazzino just finished large scale project at Terminal 8 at American Airlines. In addition to the plane, there are 12 other pieces at the airport. There is one mural that is 13 feet by 16 feet in 3-D with mobiles by the baggage claim along with a half dozen other mid size to large size pieces.

Charles Fazzino cannot point to one piece of artwork that he considers his most important piece of artwork. However, he points to a theme that is most prevalent in his artwork and has become an icon and synonymous with his name especially in Europe and Asia. It is the Big Apple. Most people who buy originals of Charles Fazzino’s artwork are looking for Apple pieces because it really typifies what he does. The Apple pieces are usually a large Apple with New York coming out of the top of it but he does it in so many different variations of colors and themes. The Apple what people know him for.

Fazzino at The Art of Pop & Comics at Coral Springs Museum of Art

Several hundred people turned out for the opening night reception of the Art of Pop & Comics Exhibition at the Coral Springs Museum of Art on Thursday, March 5th. Highlighting the show are five new originals from Fazzino, all pertaining to the theme of the show: “A Cartoon Celebration of the Masters,” “A Simpson’s Selfie,” “Felix the Cat in Outer Space,” “Batman and Batgirl,” and “Spiderman III.”

“A Cartoon Celebration of the Masters” is the most ambitious work in the show. An homage to the Masters, Fazzino seamlessly folded some of our favorite cartoon characters into the most famous scenes painted by some of the Masters, including Vincent Van Gogh, Georgia O’Keefe, Leonardo da Vinci, Edvard Munch, René Magritte, Salvador Dali, Andrew Wyeth, Joan Miró, Jackson Pollock, Claude Monet, and Georges Seurat. “This is a tribute piece,” said Fazzino. “The paintings I chose from the Masters are so incredibly recognizable….as are the characters now interwoven throughout them. It’s a meeting of two worlds with two different languages that come together in this one, intricately assembled, composition.”

U-0323 LR

“I wanted to choose some characters that aren’t necessarily the most popular today, but that everyone can relate to,” said Fazzino about his original titled “Felix the Cat in Outer Space,” “Felix was one of my favorites growing up and I actually remember one episode when he went into space and his bag of tricks turned into a satellite.”

U-0321 LR

“A Simpson’s Selfie” highlights how so many of our cartoon characters have evolved to be almost human-like. “Who couldn’t’ see the Simpsons touring NYC in a taxi and taking a bunch of selfies,” stated Fazzino.

Of course, the exhibition was rounded out with the obligatory superheroes (Batman, Batgirl, and Spiderman) and a celebration of our good friends Popeye and Olive Oil.
The exhibition runs from March 5th through May 23rd at the Coral Springs Art Museum located at 2855 Coral Springs Rd, Coral Springs, FL. Telephone is 954-340-5000.

Pelham Middle School Takes Fazzino Studio Tour

A few weeks ago, we welcomed Rebecca Schwartz and her 8th Grade Studio Art Class from Pelham Middle School for a tour. It’s not something we get to do very often, but when we do, it is always rewarding. The kids had the opportunity to tour the studio, see Charles Fazzino’s private collection, and learn about the complicated process of making his highly-detailed art.  They also received some insight into what it takes to become a professional artist, as well as some inspiration about the different directions they can take. “The kids were awesome,” said Fazzino. “I couldn’t believe their passion for the arts. It was refreshing to see. I use any opportunity I can to advocate for arts education in our schools and these kids made a stronger argument for it than I ever could. The skills they are learning and the creativity they are nourishing in school and out is going to serve them well in life. I encourage them to stick with it, no matter what they choose for a career. It’s so important to exercise that creative spirit.”

The kids took what they learned back to the classroom and created an ambitious “thank you” card for Fazzino and his staff. “They showed real talent,” said Fazzino. “I was really impressed and very touched. Great kids. I wish them well.”

Fran Kessler Paint Party Artwork

How about a nice evening filled with paints, canvases, smocks, friends, laughter, wine, and tapas. Sounds perfect, right? Well, it’s the newest social craze and we think it’s just marvelous. Our Sales Director Fran Kessler experienced it first hand at Muse Paint Bar in Norwalk, Ct. “What a fantastic experience,” commented Kessler. “I went with a group of friends and we had a great time. When you arrive, there is an easel already set up with your name on it and all of the supplies you need. There were about 40-50 people there so the place was hopping. Everyone works on the same image and you know going in what you’re going to paint. First things first… we ordered tapas and a glass of wine… then we picked up our paint brushes and got to work. The instructor in the front of the room guided us step-by-step and each one of us walked out with our own masterpiece.  It was so much fun!”

We wanted to find out more about this phenomenon so we Googled “Paint Bars.” Several came up, but the one that struck us the most was called Paint Nite. Paint Nite is an organization that partners with venues all over the world to throw painting parties and events. When we say all over the world, we mean ALL OVER THE WORLD. You can sign up and attend a Paint Nite almost anywhere, including throughout the US and Canada, Argentina, Australia, South Africa, and the UK! We had no idea this was such a trend.

Paint Nite refers to their events as “creative drinking,” but there is no doubt that the focus is on the art. We love the fact that there are so many people out there who want to feed their artistic souls. Muse Paint Bar, in fact, even runs private events and kids events. What a fantastic outlet for kids.

So, as you can see, we are a fan of paint parties. Consider attending one… or throw your own!

Parsons Challenge 1

Aspiring artist and friend Colin Taylor sent us some samples of his work recently. Colin is a very talented young artist, who in fact, his honing some of his skills working for Charles Fazzino’s art studio assembling Fazzino limited editions. “I love Colin’s drive,” said Charles Fazzino. “He is so incredibly creative but at the same time, he’s meticulous and pays attention to detail. That’s a unique combination and I think he will go far. His work is interesting and inspiring. He is still searching for his voice and once he finds it, he’s going to be unstoppable.”

In Colin’s Own Words:

I am an artist across multiple genres. I am a musician, a thespian, a writer, a photographer, and I only recently began exploring the field of visual arts. Since I was a little kid I have always loved to express myself and have made statements ranging from “be whom you want to be” to “funky socks and sandals are cool”. An honest answer to the question of why I make art is that I cannot not make art. Compared to those who see a career as a desire, I see myself as someone following a calling. Art is all around me and I love to create.

There are many opportunities in this field and therefore I would love to explore my options. I am taken by the world of design where I create to inform. I tend to use mixed media in my artwork not only because I like they way it looks but also because, by reusing materials that would have been thrown into a landfill, I am helping the environment. My goal, like the Parsons challenge, is to ultimately inform people of everyday actions that are overlooked but could be crucial in protecting the environment and ourselves. I am constantly learning new techniques and processes as the need arises as I draw upon my own experiences and react to an inner emotional life that often explores current environmental events.”

Fazzino’s Newest San Francisco 3D Pop Art

Let’s Go Fly a Kite…San Francisco is the latest Fazzino release on the city by the bay. “I have always loved San Francisco,” said Fazzino. “It has a personality all its own. The city is colorful….the people are colorful…the food is colorful….there is always something fun going on. I drew the kites to symbolize the cities independent and free-flowing identity. They are unique in shape and celebrate the way that San Franciscans seem to live life in full swing!”

Charles Fazzino first released a limited edition about San Francisco in 1992. It was titled “I Left my Heart in San Francisco” and featured many of the cities tourist highlights including Ghirardelli Square and the Fisherman’s Wharf. He soon followed that up with a tribute to the San Francisco 49ers in 1999, the NFL’s toast of the town!

Charles Fazzino has painted hundreds, if not thousands, of original works. His subjects cover the gamut from cityscape to popular culture to sports to professions, and beyond. But even he hasn’t painted it ALL yet. Hence, the demand for Charles Fazzino commissioned original works. Sometimes a client wants a specific view of a particular place, but in many instances, the commissions become a lot more personal. They celebrate peoples’ lives and homes and livelihoods. Fazzino has been asked to celebrate special occasions and pay tribute to relatives, friends, and family.

This painting was commissioned by a collector in Germany who wanted a celebration of the falling of the Berlin Wall combined with The Brandenburg Gate and particular aspects of the city. In addition, he wanted it done in a particular color scheme. Fazzino was happy to oblige.

This New York collector wanted his favorite artist to pay tribute to his favorite spy…James Bond:

In 2014, Fazzino was commissioned to create a painting celebrating the 25th anniversary of a premier media services, production, creative, and digital interactive company. Fazzino was able to take the entire history of the company and present it in one spell-binding image. It was unveiled at the official anniversary party and it made quite a statement.

Sometimes the commissions are quite personal. In this instance, a family wanted to pay tribute to the family patriarch. The result was an artwork that encompasses the essence of a man…his life…his successes…and all that he loves. An incredibly touching celebration.

Then there are the celebrities. This piece was commissioned as a gift for supermodel and actress Kate Upton.

“I love doing commission work, but it can be incredibly challenging,” says Charles Fazzino. “It’s incredibly gratifying when someone wants me to capture something that is so important to them in my characteristically three-dimensional style. Sometimes it’s a struggle to maintain my artistic flow while making sure I meet all of the client’s expectations but I’m so proud when I see the smiles and hear how much these pieces touch people. Sometimes, the works are so personal that I end up feeling like I’m ‘part of the family’ and that’s just fine by me.”
